Paintings

Ami Campbell is known for her dream-like compositions that combine colorful mark-making and creative patterning, with an organic application of movement. Her playful choice of palette allows the eyes of the viewer to freely dance around the paper, engaging the imagination.

Campbell places depth into the texture of her paper, creating unexpected marks with her pallet knives, digging and slicing into paper with the use of her process-driven practice.

Campbell brings together abstraction and figure through the use of color. She creates most of her work through the curation of pallets from photographs she takes during her travels up and down the California Coast. Campbell places a primary emphasis on local creatures and landscapes in order to bring an awareness to the spaces we share.

Campbell lives and works in Humboldt, California, with her partner and fellow artist, Elaine Leon. She received her BFA in San Francisco, CA at San Francisco State University. Campbell’s work has been collected across the USA, and parts of Europe.

Art Classes and Framing Workshops

Now accepting new students. Available days for after-school art classes are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for two hour class sessions. Classes are $30 per hour and all art supplies are covered. I tend to meet with my students on a weekly basis. Classes are taught by a student- growth basis, I structure the class based off the student’s interest and assist them in their ideas while incorporating lessons on “The Elements of Art,” Art History, and creating a piece from start to finish. I usually begin each lesson with a warmup, and we return to the main project on a weekly basis. Depending on the student’s maturity, and whether they like the art enough to hang, we go into a basic framing workshop at the end of each project, so that their work is ready to hang when they bring it home.

My background in teaching began at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Oakland. I taught middle school art in the after-school program, where I provided a basis on exploring art through sustainability. For many of our projects, we made our own supplies and focused on how the art we create affect the community and the environment around us.
